RV Travel Destinations

Now that summer is here, planning a trip to one of our many national parks, monuments, or historical sites in a RV is easy to do.  You will find there are many privately owned RV parks as well as state and national campgrounds especially around more popular destinations.  Consult a RV guidebook for information on the particular area you want to visit or look it up on the Internet.

Most RV guides rate campgrounds in terms of the amenities they offer and customer satisfaction along with any reservation details.  Free Wi-Fi access may be important to you while someone else desires a more rustic setting.  Campgrounds will vary from little more than a place to park your RV to offering pools, restaurants, and activities, but then so do the fees.

According to the National Parks Conservation Association, the 10 top National Park destinations are:

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park (TN, NC)
  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Yosemite National Park
  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Rocky Mountain National Park
  • Zion National Park
  • Olympic National Park
  • Grand Teton National Park
  • Acadia National Park
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Be sure and check out the National Park Service’s website as it is filled with information on all of the activities and current news regarding any park within their system.  They have a search tool available that lets you find:

  • A park by the name.
  • Any park located within a particular state.
  • Range of activities you are looking for such as biking, hiking, boating, or climbing.
  • Topics that are of special interest to you such as revolutionary or civil war sites, maritime or American Indian history, and things like wildflowers or seashore.

You want to be sure and store your RV where it is safe and convenient to use.  Abba Self Storage Units offers RV storage that is all that and more.  We have 300 paved spaces of secure parking for RVs and offer a full Service Island for dumping, washing, and air as well as various sundry RV supplies to get you back on the road.

Boating Safety Tips

Now that boating season is upon us it is a good time to review a few safety tips that everyone who operates or rides in a boat should be aware of.  The most important steps you can take to help ensure your family’s safety are easy to do and may make a difference.

The number one tip experts agree upon is to always wear a life jacket.  When the US Coast Guard analyzed all boating fatalities for 2011, they found that in 84% of drowning deaths the victims were not wearing life jackets.  It can’t be stressed enough – find a personal flotation device or PDF (life jacket) that is comfortable, fits well, and wear it.

Many boating accidents happen in densely used areas and are sometimes caused by a driver being under the influence of alcohol.  It is reported that 17% of boating fatalities are a result of alcohol use.  Enjoy yourself and have fun, but please avoid excessive drinking aboard the boat.  Just as when using a car, assign a designated driver for the boat, and for the safety of all on board, make sure passengers drink responsibly.

Additionally be sure to:

  • Follow weather conditions in advance of your trip and update yourself as needed.
  • Always carry the proper safety equipment and be prepared to use it.
  • Update or take a boat safety course.  Many courses are now available online and offer the basics on operating a boat, safety equipment, and weather related issues.
  • Remember that if you have children, a safety class is also important for them.

You may not be aware that the US Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) that they will perform on any recreational boat.  They will come to wherever you and your boat are.  The VSC takes about 30 to 45 minutes and can be set up online by visiting their website.  They assure boaters that nothing happens if you don’t pass, but they will leave you with a written report that addresses any issues they find.

It is a good idea to store your boat where you have easy access to it whether it is for a weekend trip or an after-work outing.  Abba Self Storage provides all that with secure, convenient boat storage.  We even have a full Service Island that offers dumping, air, and a wash/detail area.  Ask about our protected indoor spaces up to 15’ x 35’ for smaller boats.

Abba Self Storage Units is a locally owned and operated self storage business in Concord, CA, with easy access to HWYs 680/4 and 242.  We provide secure, clean, mini and large storage units as well as over 300 paved RV, auto, and boat storage spaces.  Abba Self Storage is conveniently located for the Bay Area including the surrounding communities of Pittsburg, Martinez, Walnut Creek Pacheco and Pleasant Hill self storage customers.

Useful Tips When Moving Out of State

Moving out of state is not that much more difficult than moving across town but does require careful planning.  Hopefully you will have the opportunity to visit your new location before the move to see firsthand the area you will be living in.  If you are unable to do so, remember the Internet is a great resource for information on housing and the surrounding community in general.  Consider renting rather than buying if you must commit to a place sight unseen.

A couple of months before your move decide whether you will need the assistance of a professional moving company and contact several to get free quotes.  Check out reviews on the companies and only use one that has a favorable reputation.  Cost will be based on the total weight and volume of all the household goods and furniture you are moving.  Purge what you don’t need.  Remember never pack personal documents or valuables in a moving van but keep them with you.

Things to get organized before the move:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to shop around for the best insurance rates for the new area and set-up your auto and home owners/renter’s coverage.
  • Notify the post office and all creditors of your address change.  Do the same for magazine subscriptions.
  • Take care of utilities – cancel for your old place and set up for the new one.
  • Do some research (again the Internet is a good place to start) regarding schools in the area as well as doctors, dentists, and convenient shopping.
  • Transfer or close bank accounts and remove items from safety deposit boxes.
  • If needed, make travel arrangements for your pets.
  • Remember most states will require you to get a new driver’s license and car registration tags so locate a nearby office.
  • If you are moving into temporary housing, you may want to use a self storage facility for items that are not required until you are more permanently located.
  • Be sure to notify the moving company as soon as possible regarding any damages that may have occurred during the move.

Looking to Down-size to a Smaller Home?

There are several things to consider before you sell the family home and down-size to a smaller place.  Most importantly take the time to think about what you hope to gain from going smaller.

Do you want or need certain conveniences that are unavailable in your present home or are you looking to save money and time by not having as much to care for?  Are you interested in a complete change of lifestyle such as moving to a beach community, near certain recreational activities, or a smaller/larger urban area?

Once you have answered the basic question of the direction you want to go in, you can start to put a plan in place.  Be realistic with yourself and consider the following:

  • How much will your home sell for in the current market, and then again, how much do you want to spend on new housing?
  • Base decisions on whether you plan to travel a lot and how much time will be spent away from home.  How easy will it be to have your new home maintained in your absence?
  • If one of your reasons for down-sizing is to save money, keep in mind any hidden costs such as condo fees and requiring new furniture that may be more suited to a smaller space.
  • Does a house meet your lifestyle choices better because you want the opportunity to garden and retain an outdoor living space, or is a condo or apartment more to your liking?
  • Do you want/need public transportation options and desire shopping close by?
  • How important is it to be conveniently located near family and friends?
  • A smaller place will most likely mean that you will have extra household goods and furniture.  A good idea is to use a self storage unit to store extra items for a period of time until you are absolutely sure the initial choices you make were the right ones.

Abba Self Storage Units is one of the newer, high-tech storage facilities located off HWYs 680/2 and 242 in Concord, CA.  Our large and mini storage units are extremely clean and secure with alarms and sprinklers in every unit.  We offer paved parking for RVs, autos, and boats. Thinking about Buying a Classic Car?

By Abba Self Storage Units

It may have been your dream for years or something that you just started to get interested in, but before you buy a classic car, do your homework.  Start by looking through catalogs and going to classic car shows to get a feel for the market and to confirm what it is you want.

Ask yourself a series of question about what you plan to do with it.  Will it only be for show or will you drive it around often, rarely?  Are you interested in buying one that is already restored or will you do the work yourself, or pay to have it done?  Is this for an investment or purely a hobby?

Once you have answered these questions consider the following:

  • Set a budget – How much money do you want to spend outright and, if it is a fixer upper, what is your budget for that?
  • Where will you store the car?  Your classic car will need a home of its own.  If you do not have extra garage space, factor in the cost of renting secure, protected storage.
  • Talk to anyone you can who owns a classic car for advice and tips on what to avoid.
  • Check out clubs in your area and any other classic car enthusiasts’ activities that may be around for you to join in on such as car shows, parades, etc.
  • Look for dealers of classic cars.  Search auctions, Internet sales, and private owners.
  • Do some research on VIN codes for the age and style of the car you are looking to buy, and make sue there is adequate documentation to ensure it is a legitimate car before you buy.
  • Once you find a car, have it appraised and take it for a drive (if possible).  Get referrals for a good mechanic in your area that works on classic cars.

Have fun with your new car and enjoy it.  It can open up the door to many new friendships with other classic car enthusiasts.

RV Travel Tips

By Abba Self Storage Units

So you finally bought the RV you have been thinking about for years, now what?  While RV travel is a fun, inexpensive way to get out and see the country, a few basic tips can avoid problems down the road and ensure it really is a great adventure.

Keep in mind that many homeowners’ associations do not allow the storage of a RV in the neighborhood. Whether this is the case in your neighborhood or not,  be a good neighbor and plan on storing your RV at a safe, convenient storage facility to keep it from detracting from the curb appeal of your home and attractiveness of the neighborhood.

Once you are ready to hit the road one of the most important steps is to take time to plan ahead.  You need to map out an itinerary with the stops you will make and points of interest along the way.  Include details of how far you will drive each day, and where you will park the RV at night.

To avoid pitfalls, here are some handy tips:

  • Consult RV and travel guides as well as search the Internet to find out about the areas you plan to visit, and make sure to bring along plenty of maps and/or a GPS.
  • Get out and drive the RV before the big trip.  Practice backing up and using the mirrors.  Familiarize yourself with how it handles.
  • There are several websites you can google that contain lists of overnight RV parking.  Many of them include the rates.
  • Think about your style.  Are you just looking for RV campgrounds or occasionally would free parking offered by places (no hook-ups) such as Walmart, casinos, other large stores, and some rest stops work just as well?
  • Check with every park you intend to stay at to make reservations if you can, and ask what amenities they offer.  Remember, the more amenities, the higher the fees are.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected.  Be sure to pack flashlights, candles, and matches.  Bring first aid supplies and insect repellant.
  • Pack a small tool box.  An RV requires different maintenance than your home.  You will be monitoring and maintaining a propane tank, generator, and water pumps.  Also, it is very important to check tire tread and pressure often.

Studies have shown that a family of four vacationing in an RV can save 50% over other types of vacations.   So whether you are a retired couple or a family with kids, an RV road trip can be a wonderful way to travel.

Tips for Marketing Your House

Get Your Home Ready to Sell

By Abba Self Storage Units

Getting your home ready to sell in the current real estate market is easier with a little bit of strategic planning.  You want the house to have curbside appeal and an allover polished and well-maintained look both inside and out to set it above the competition.

Be honest with yourself and view it objectively.  You don’t need to spend a lot of money; you just want it to look clean and appealing to those looking for a new home.

Steps on your to-do list:

  • Unclutter by going through each room of the house and get rid of all the unnecessary stuff.  Clear off counters in both the kitchen and bathrooms.  Organize closets and cabinets leaving plenty of open space.
  • Thoroughly clean house from top to bottom.  Dust light fixtures, fan blades, base-boards, and wash windows.
  • Paint where needed in light, neutral colors.  Shampoo carpets and wax floors.
  • Inspect and repair any plumbing, heating, air conditioning, or alarm problems.  Replace furnace filters.
  • You might want to install new hardware in the bathrooms and re-caulk around tubs and sinks.  Buy new towels, bathroom rug, and a shower curtain.
  • Outside the lawn needs to be kept mowed, edged, and watered.  Trees and bushes trimmed.  All clutter removed from the yard.  Store your boat or RV somewhere else.  Clean exterior windows, gutters, and walkways.  Paint the front door a fresh, new color.  Plant annual flowers if seasonal.

Staging your home for potential buyers:

  • Consider renting a storage unit for some of your furniture and belongings.  Keeping each room sparsely furnished and uncluttered will make your home look bigger.
  • Remove and store family pictures and personal mementos.  Your goal is to have a buyer feel comfortable envisioning it as their home.
  • Before a showing, buy fresh flowers or bake a loaf of bread.  Open up the blinds, and if the weather permits, a window.
